Mr. Justice. W. E- Raney, of the Supreme Court of Ontario, and former Attornev-General of Ontario, has died, says- a Toronto message. He was /4 years old. Mr. W. A. Sharp, accountant of the Horowhenua Power Board, has been appointed secretary and treasurer of the Opunake Tower Board in place- of Mr. J. N. Stephenson, resigned. Mr. Sharp will commence at Opunake on October 16.

Mr. J. F. McDonald, of the literary staff of the “Taranaki Daily News,” has accepted a position on the literary staff of the “Star,” the new newspaper just starting in Melbourne. He leaves next week for Australia t-o take jp his duties. Mr. W. J. Poison was yesterday >• ranted four days’ leave of absence from the House of Representatives on account of urgent public business, states a Press Association message.

Sir Edwin Mitehelson, Auckland, was granted a fortnight’s leave of absence ”y the Legislative Council yesterday on account of illness, the Press Association reports.

Shanks, who has -been promoted to become second assistant secretary ;o the post office. Mr B. E. E. Whitcombe, until re---ently manager of the Umaru branch of the Bank of New South Wales, has arrived at New Plymouth to succeed Mr. P. C. Gar-nliam, who will relinquish the office of manager of the New Plymouth branch at the end of the month. Mr. Whitcombe has been attached to the Dannevirke and Gisborne offices. He was manager for several years at Mas-teuton!. . Mr and. Mrs Garnliam propose visiting Australia before deciding upon a permanent place of residence in New Zealand. Mr. John Daley, who died at Lower Hutt on Saturday, was believed to be the only surviving founder of the New Plymouth Hibernian Society. He was 87 years old. From Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland, Mr Daley landed at Wellington in 1873, and three years later walked to New Plymouth. He returned south later, and some years ago did contract work in reclaiming land at Wellington. Farming in the Wairarapa next claimed his attention, and in 1910 he farmed in the Taranaki district. He lived for 20 years at Manaia, hut with the death of his son three years ago he went to Lower Hutt to live with the other members of his family. Mr Da-ley took a keen interest in R-ughy football, and his sons, James and John, gained reru’esentativc honours for Taranaki and Wellington. Both were at one time members of the Petone club. Mr Daley leaves a widow, three daughters, Mi's T. August (Petone), Mrs- H. J. Baldwin (Lower Hutt) and Miss M. Daley /Lower Hutt), and three sons, Messrs. Michael (Auckland), James (Petone) and William (Lower Hutt). as well as 17 grandchildren and eight great-1 grandchildren.
