QUARTERLY MEETING

BRIGADE MEMBER'S SUCCESS

At the quarterly meeting -of the Haivera Fire Board to-day in the borough chambers, members present were Messrs L. A. Bone (chairman), iff. K Cameron. L. H. Chapman, J. H. Scanlon and J. D- .Robb and H. S. Elliott (secretary).

Various matters, concerning insurance were given attention. The report presented, by the superintendent (.Mr A. Morrison) for the quarter to date stated that there had been four calls, one actual house tiro and one car fire. No serious damage was occasioned. Fireman W. Batchelor had resigned from the brigade and Fireman 0. Fredericks was accepted as a probationer, the strength of the brigade be ing 16. Fireman V. Powell secured first place for the Dominion in the last associate membership examination, conducted by the New Zealand Fire Brigades Institute and open to members with a record of oyer five years of service. Ho secured 319 marks out of 320 while Fireman L. Milroy was equal fourth with 293. These results were considered highly, satisfactory, especially as these members were volunteers. In a one-man junior competition motor event, Fireman Fredericks was first and Firemen C. Perrett and N. Hatcher second and third respectively. The plant in the water tower was tested weekly and periodically by a power board representative and was m good order.' both tanks being full at present The electrical installation at the station was renovated in compliance with existing; regulations. The Duplex direct fire alarm and the siren wore regularly tested and in goou order. The superintendent said hp find been advised -4by the hospital board to dismantle the unreliable fire alarm at the Old People’s Home, as the board had installed an extra telephone. This was accordingly done. The fire engines and appliances were in good order. A copy of pamphlets “Fire Hydrants,” written bv the late Captain Hugo was placed before the meeting. This book stressed the effectiveness of the sluice valve hydrant and its greater sanitary condition. It was suggested that the board should request the borough council to adopt the screwed outlet valve hydrant when extending existing reticulations, or replacing damaged ball hydrants. The chairman said that the success of the firemen was very gratifying and it was pleasing to see them taking such an interest in the work of the brigade. It was decided to send letters of congratulation to them. It was suggested hv the chairman that when future works were being undertaken the new hydrants should he used.
