HAWERA BOROUGH RATES

PROPOSED LEVIES FOR YEAR. ADOPTION OF ESTIMATES. The estimates for the current year A operations were adopted at a special meeting of the Hawera Borough Council last evening, when the proposed rates were also considered. The estimates show ai Isljghtt jin, crea.s« yi comparison with last year, this being mainly due to an increase in the hospital levies, renovations to buildings, and work at the sewerage outfall. A sum of £I2OO is allocated for the sewerage system, £660 being for 24 chains of piping and the balance in case the outfall itself had to be undertaken. Provision is also made; for the 5 per cent, rebate for the prompt payment of rates. The total of rates to be levied will be £15,822, compared with £15,428 last year. In discussing the proposed rates the Mayor (Mr JT E. Campbell) said the council would be wise to strike rates to bring in approximately the same amount as last year. The small amount the rates _might be reduced would not he sufficient to make any material difference to individual ratepayers, and a reduction would weaken the council’s position. If everything went satisfactorily the council should be able next year to make a sufficiently substantial reduction to benefit ratepayers. Hip sewer outfall was work not oontem plated, nor was the renovation of the buildings, and the borough had no control over the hospital levy. Owing to the revaluation the rate in the £1 would be higher. Conversion savings would not offset the special rate this .year, if the council were wise, as . n additional amount had to be met -*i making the adjustments.
