CRASHES IN MOTOR RACES

THREE DRIVERS KILLED. TRAGIC ITALIAN CONTESTS. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.; ADLAN, Sept. 10. Three famous racing motorists were killed at Monza to-day. Campari, driving an Alfa-Romeo in the Italian Grand Prix 500-kilometre race, collided with Borzacchini’s car and both men were killed in the crash over the embankment. In a later event Count Czaikowski was killed when hie car overturned near the scene of the collision.

Slipperiness of the track owing to the heavy rain or spilt oil apparently caused the collision, in which four cars crashed. Ballestrero, a competitor who avoided death by supreme skill and remained in the race, said afterwards : ‘‘l was six yards behind the victims when, amid a bursting cloud of smoke, Borzacchini’s and Campari’s cars, which apparently touched at 130 miles an hour, somersaulted over a 13-foot embankment beside the track. Castelbarco over-precipitately jammed on his brakes and skidded off the track at the opposite side. He was thrown out.' Barbieri’s car somersaulted thrice into a field.”

The racing nevertheless proceeded, but the distance was reduced from 22 laps to 14. Lord Howe, in a Whitneystraight, smilingly rejected the suggestion to retire, declaring that the accident was no reason to give up. The race resulted in a win for Fagioli (Alfa-Romeo). His average speed was 174.74 kilometres an hour. His fastest lap was 186.33 kilometres an hour. Nuvolari, who won in Ireland a week ago, was second and Schender third. Count Czaikowski. holder of the world’s hour record and winner of the first heat, was leading 10 competitors in the final of the 63-kilometre race when his car overturned near the fatal snot where Campari was killed. It left the track and hurst into flames, incinerating the occupant in the presence of thousands of horror-stricken spectators. including his wife, whom friends led away dazed.
