Ruth Litzig, the most beautiful and courageous of Germany’s girl sit iinmens, who paid for her endurance iecord on Monday with her life, died of heart failure due to strain. More than 150,000 people paid sixpence each to see her swimming slowly like an imprisoned fish round a pool at Essen. The girl was kept awake only by a jazz band and loud speaker. I mally with unseeing eyes and distoi-tcd face she collapsed and was saved from drowning by her swimming instructor, who leapt into the pool. Wrapped m cotton wool she wa.s rushed to hospital. The cheering crowd thought sue was suffering only from natural exhaustion. Ruth never woke from her stupor. When her heart stopped beating she was revived by injections, jut the efforts were unavailing.
