FANCY DRESS CARNIVAL

JUVENILE BALL FOR CHARITY OVER 250 CHILDREN ATTEND. DANCING AND POPULAR GAMES. Organised far chajrity, the fancy dress juvenile carnival, held at the 'Winter Show Buildings in Hawera last evening, was attended by over 2-50 children from all parts of the district and as far afield as New Plymouth and Te Horo. In addition approximately 200 adults viewed the proceedings and 100 remained to dance when the children’s session concluded. Part of the decorations and the lighting effects, which were features of the Mayor’s Charity Ball the night before, were displayed for the occasion, and the scene in the upstairs ballroom as the young guests arrived was as colourful as it was animated. On entering the Canadian line Grove the children gazed in wonderment at the big “moon” and the huge log “fires.” They were in a world of make believe and the stairs were but another avenue to new sights and sounds. The ballroom, with its canopy of multi-coloured paper streamers and crepe festoons of old gold and scarlet,' was a blaze of lights. Soon becoming accustomed to the novelty of their surroundings, the children found other interests when the music for the Grand March commenced. The scores of boys and girls marched in double file and their costumes were seen to advantage. Beggars and princesses', black cats and white rabbits, cowboys, Indians, toy soldiers and a host oj; other story-book characters were represented in one of the most spectacular assemblies of its kind yet held in Hawera. The march broke into waltz time and the dance began. The floor was controlled by Mr. "W. G. Simpson, whose difficult task was rendered somewhat less arduous by reason of the very valuable assistance given by Misses E. and C. Free, V and L. Campbell, I. Baker and S. Page and Mr. S. Pettitt. The children were marshalled into position for several popular games which included Hie ‘•‘Grand: Old Duke of York,” “Nuts and'May” and “Oranges and Lemons.’ Other' dances were the senior and tiny tot's polkas and finally the children marched downstairs to the supper hall wherd sandwiches and cakes, hot cordials, ice creams kindly donated by Mf. F. H. Ollerensliaw, and sweets wei’e served bv the girls of the Hawera Technical High School at the •direction of the prefects in charge. All Wore ’ the school uniform and the assistance rendered was greatly appieciated. The catering arrangements were supervised by Alesdames H. K. Kemp and H. W. Swinburn and the kitchen staff by Mesdames AV. Adams and E. Evans. The floral decoration? for the tables were arranged ‘ durinp the afternoon by the Mayoress /Mrs .T. E. Campbell) and Mesdames J. W Yelvin and AY. T. Good. The success of the ball was due m a large measure to the loyal co-opera-tion of the various committees and to the work of the honorary organising! secretary (Mr. It. P. Morrissey) and six members of the Hawera register- j eel unemployed, who were in attendance throughout the afternoon and evening. The general committee promoting the carnival was Messrs. S. A. Chisholm (chairman), J. E. Campbell (Ma-vor of Hawera), T. It. Overton. L O. Hooker, AY. J. Bright, A. Cole man,,' P. O. Veale, A. K. Fyson and P. Coleman. Other workers who rendered valuable service for both fun< fion were Mr. El Pettitt, who gave j generously of bis time and energy m various capacities, and several carriers including AJessrs. G. Brough, F. Jackson and J. Wright. After supper the children returned to’the ballroom for further dances until "the "session concluded with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. 'During the evening the _ Alayor returned thanks to the High School girls, the parents and all who assisted, remarking that the children’s effort would largely augment the funds in hand for the relief of distress.
