FAST PLAY AT AUCKLAND. VICTORY TO AUSTRALIANS. (By Telegrapli—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Fob. 26. _ The Australian tennis players made their only appearance (at Auckland against an Auckland team yesterday. The weather was ideal and the attendance was fair. Purcell, the Australian junior champion, proved himself a player of great promise. He served with tremendous pace and frequently aeed Bartleet. It was generally agreed that Purceii’s serving was as fast as that of Vines and at the same time much more consistent. The visitor displayed a fine variety of shots with both hands in a long-drawn-out first set which proved Bartleet’s undoing, although the former champion played exceptionally well, gaining the third set. Dunlop exhibited amazing -energy in dashing to the net continuously. His volleying was easily the most brilliant and effective seen at Auckland for many years. His accuracy and consistency and variation of length and direction frequently found Stedmau out of position. He won the admiration and applause of the gallery. The Aucklander played well, hut the miraculous volleying of his opponent usually left him standing. The visitors were superior in the doubles, both volleying brilliantly, while Purcell again served with great pace. The scores are.: Purcell beat Bartleet, 10—12, 6 —2, 4 —6, 6—2. 6—2. Dunlop beat Steelman 6 — 2, 9 —<, ■l—6, 6—l.
Dunlop and Purcell beat Steelman and Sturt G —3, 6—3.
