It was generally agreed that Purceii’s serving was as fast as that of Vines and at the same time much more consistent. The visitor displayed a fine variety of shots with both hands in a long-drawn-out first set which proved Bartleet’s undoing, although the former champion played exceptionally well, gaining the third set. Dunlop exhibited amazing -energy in dashing to the net continuously. His volleying was easily the most brilliant and effective seen at Auckland for many years. His accuracy and consistency and variation of length and direction frequently found Stedmau out of position. He won the admiration and applause of the gallery. The Aucklander played well, hut the miraculous volleying of his opponent usually left him standing. The visitors were superior in the doubles, both volleying brilliantly, while Purcell again served with great pace. The scores are.: Purcell beat Bartleet, 10—12, 6 —2, 4 —6, 6—2. 6—2.
