BREACH OF CUSTOMS ACT GIANT JAPANESE SAMPAN FINE AT THURSDAY ISLAND VOYAGE OF ADVENTURE (United Prejs Association—By Electric Telegrapli Copyrignt.) Received 11.40 a.m. to-day. BRISBANE, Feb. 27. A sequel to the interception of a Japanese giant sampan by the Customs authorities occurred "in the Thursday Island Police Court when S. Koomatoo, the captain, was fined £lO for a breach of the Customs Act.
The case involved Koomatoo’s failure to answer a Customs vessel’s signals. According to advice received by the Collector of Customs the vessel was of 80 tons. .She left Formosa in December .for.'the Caroline Islands, but engine trouble necessitated a visit to Zamboanga in the Philippines. It was then decided to visit Australia for adventure'and pleasure. Three tons of troohus shell worth £2OO was found aboard the vessel.
