The Hawera Rotary Club is well represented at the annual conference of the New Zealand District of Rotary International which was formally opened by the Governor-General at Palmerston North to-day. Strong indignation at the action of the Government in refusing to grant a permit for an art union in aid of improvements to Bolton Street cemetery Avas expressed at .the annual meeting of the Wellington Early Settlers’ and Historical Association on Saturday afternoon. ‘‘The way in Avhich the association has been treated is a disgrace to Cabinet and to Parliament as a whole,’-’ stated a member when the annual report was under discussion. “Three years ago Ave applied for a permit to hold an art union, but so far Avithout success. A new organisation like the Smith Family is allowed to hold an art union, yet our association, upon which falls a great deal of responsibility of looking after Bolton Street cemetery, in which statesmen, soldiers, sailors, and distinguished pioneers are buried, is refused a similar privilege. I repeat it is a disgrace to Parliament and to everybody connected with it.’’
