NORTH DEFEATS SOUTH HIGH STANDARD MAINTAINED KEEN PLAY AT ELTHAAI. ' Most interesting and close was the annual match between tennis representatives from North and South Taranaki, which took place at Eltham on Saturday. The result was a narrow win to North by 13 matches to 11, and a margin of seven games. Taking into account the two juniors, the result was 14 to 13, with only two games in favour of the North. There was a large attendance of enthusiastic supporters from all parts of! Taranaki. Hill, the club’s . honorary secretary, and his committee had all arrangements exceedingly well made and the matches proceeded most expeditiously and with the minimum of delay.

The courts wore in good order, though a trifle uneven in. parts, making the ball inclined to keep low at times, Towards the end of the afternoon the light became troublesome on the court nearest the pavilion. At the conclusion Air. Leece, on behalf of the association, thanked the Eltham club and .officails for their excellent arrangements for placing their courts at the disposal of the association. He congratulated the winners on their form in a close contest and thanked, the Eltham ladies for serving a dainty afternoon tea. PROMINENT PEiRFOR A 1 AN OIOS The keenest struggle was in the top combined match, when Strombom and Miss Taylor met Watson and Aliss J. Hicks. All were playing finely Land a high standard was maintained The southern players went away with the lead in the first set, but their oppon(ents equalised at two all and then got the lead and kept it, winning: 6—4. The southerners made no race of the second and, combining in great style, held the advantage and won a love set. Th e deciding third set was a marathon. North led at first, but south equalised five all and, winning the next, were within match, point'.-of the set; but again their opponents evened and six aIL was called. Once more the same thing happened _ and the match went to seven all. Then north, rallviuo- well secured the lead niter four deuces ane. continuing to score they ran out winners 9 —7. Another fine struggle was that between the top ladies. Aliss W.yids won the first and her .opponent evened, but the southerner ,then went ahead and won nicely 6—4. Aliss Taylor had the lead m the second set, but Miss Wyltls recovered 'veil and, placing in fine style, she evened at four all. She continued her good play and won the next two and “set match.”

Jonas and Watson had an exciting struggle with Lobb and Ballantyne. I n the first set no fewer than six vantage games were played and in the second, two before the north players secured their win.

In the doubles they met the top Iftdies, Alisses Taylor and Simpson, and had to lower their colours after a three set match.

i Miss Wyltfs and Graham had an unusual result in their match with Alisses Pepper and Lobb. Each match resulted 6—4, north winning two and losing the second.
