ATHLETIC CHAMPIONS

West Coast Centre Titles GARRETT’S RECORD RUN Feat In Three=Mile Event BLACK WINS 440 AND 220 YARDS TARANAKI LADIES WIN] RELAY. The performance of L. E. Garrett (Hawera) in winning the three mile run in lomin 27sec, was the. outstanding feature of the annual West Coast (N'.l.) Centre amateur athletic and cycle championships held at Cook’s Gardens, Wanganui, on Saturday afternoon and evening. Garrett’s time broke the centre record by 14sec, find he bettered his Taranaki record—.created the previous Saturday—by j.Osec. A® at the Taranaki championships, Garrett ran very comfortably and received an ovation from the crowd for a. sterling ■run., On his form, which is .steadily improving, Garrett has every prospect of being very close to Savidan and Cooper (Auckland) in the New Zealand championships Tlie field at Wanganui provided him with verv poor company and had he been extended, or had’ a pacemaker, his time canid have been improved. Competitors at the meeting were representative of the New Plymouth, Opunalce, Eltham, Hawera. Stratford, Kia Ton, (Palmerston North), Wanganui, Manawatu, Marion, and Taihapo Clubs and although there was not the closeness of competition witnessed at the Taranaki championships the general standard was high. A fairly stiff wind slowed up times and worm casts somewhat deadened the track. I* ive records were broken, however, and one equalled, the new records, with the previous best in pa.rentheses being. One mile cycle, E. Lawrence, 2mm I9seo in heat (2mm 20sec I Ross); pole vault, F. Barraciough, 10ft 6m (9ft Sin, F. Barractaugh) ; three miles, L E. -Garrett, ISmin 27seo .(15mm 41-sec H. J. Brown); putting the shot, A D. Adlam, 35ft 7 Jin (35ft 6m, L. HuinV)'-; mile /walk, _R Q. Coleman, 6min 45 l-sseo (6min 57 l-ssec, D. Wills). The record for the ladies 160 yards- -of 12see, held jointly by, Misses J. Greagor and B. Stevens, was, equalled by Miss IV. Clark. The 120 yards hurdles was the most disappointing event -of the meeting. L. A. Newall (Hawera), undoubtedly one of the best hurdlers in New Zealand, over the distance, was unfortunate in having no competition and had to rim the course of his own, thereby being o-iven’ no opportunity to reveal his form. His time, 1.9 2-osec, was no indication of his ability in competiton. The performance of G. Sullivan (New Plymouth) in the hop, step and jump, in which he covered 45ft 2Jin, was one and a quarter inches better than at the Taranaki championships. The improved form of J. Kinsella (New Plymouth) was revealed in Ins winning the 100 yards from I. K. Carnbie (Hawera) in 10 4-ssec against a head wind. Kinsella ran particularly well, and deserved his win. With careful coaching ho should prove a worthy contestant in *any open .-print competition. T. Kerr (Hawera) did not run up to expectations, although he qualified for the final. A. E. Gilliver (Hawera) cleared Sit 6)111 in the high jump, only half an inch short of his centre record and was unfortunate in not creating a fresh record. A. Kennedy (Hawera) riding for the first time on a banked asphalt track, did not fulfil expectations in the cycle events, in comparison with his performances on the grass tracks in the Taranaki championships. S. Q. Coleman (Eltham) won the half mile walk in 3min 7sec, the time being Bsec better than the New Plymouth standard and 3 l-ssec better jfchan the time he established in the Taranaki championships. Ho also won the mile walk in 6min 45 143-sec, brpakinw the centre record by 12sec. A. D. Adlam (Stratford) again demonstrated his all-round ability in field events, winning the discus throw with 111 ft Bm, the hammer throw with il2ft 3in, and the shot put with 35ft 7)in. In the latter event Adlam set a new centre record in beating by one and a half inches the record made by L. Hunt (Hawera) in 1925-29. S. A. Black (New Plymouth) - won both the 220 and 440- yards „very deleisivelv. Kinsella filled second and Cambio third in the 220, Carnbie running second in the 440. Black, on form, -should have trouble in defending his New Zealand 440 title, and as far as West Coast competition is concerned is in a class by himself in the 220 and 440 yards. The ladies’ IQQ yards championship produced sparkling iheats and a thrilling final. Miss N. Clark (New Plymouth) beat Miss J. Greagor (Wanganui) by inches in 12sec, equalling the centre record. Miss E. Reid (Ila-we-ra) wa-s unlucky in meeting with Miss Greagor and Miss Clarke in her heat. She ran well and was just beaten for a place by inches. The breaking of tho only available pole .caused a postponement in the pole vault event when F. Barraciough (Opunalce) had cleared 10ft 6in. At the Taranaki championships Barraclpiig'h cleared lift OJin and it was expected he would have improved on that height.
