VICTIM OF BACKWASH
MAN DROWNED ON WEST COAST. RESCUE EFFORTS FAIL. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association). GREYMOUTH, Feb. 19. Arthur Nicholson, aged 30 and single, a native of Cumberland, was drowned at 11 a.m to-day at Rapahoe Beach while surfing, with other members of a picnic pary. Jhe tide was falling and a backwash unexpectedly set in, carrying away Nicholson, who was able to swim. Fair seas, were irmyning, and though John Boucher secured a grip on Nicholson a wave, parted them and when next seen Nicholson w-as 30 yards out, and he disappeared.
