EGMONT CUP TO FIJI

LADY OUEX WINS FLYING INVICTUS TAKES THE HURDLES, SUMMER MEETING OPENING WIN AND PLACE. BETTING POOL'S The Egmont Racing Club’s summer meeting opened to-day- in fine, but •overcast weather and before a moderate attendance. The track was i n splendid order. The fields, handicapped by Mr. A. Tronson, were despatched by Mr. A. Vincent, the judge being Mr. W. P. Russell. The win and place betting system proved a. popular innovation, and an appreciated service., was a running commentary- on form and a broadcast description of the .racing through a. public address system installed by Messrs Light band and Wann, Hawera. The announcer was Mr.. J. King, New Ply--month. In the following details tho order of favouritism on the win machine is given first, the order on tho place machine being shown, in parentheses:

Invictus hit the front from a good start, closely followed by Tenacre and Kimbo 1 , with a, break to Marjoram and Day Lass. The order was maintained to the first fence and at a slow pace the same order was maintained into the straight. Passing the stand Kimbo had assumed the lead with Tenacre, three lengths in front of Invictus another six lengths to Marjoram, who was jumping badly. Kimbo took charge running out of the straight from .Tenacre and Invictus, and going down the back the order was Kimbo, Invictus and Tenacre with Marjoram and Day Laiss following several lengths back. With half a mile to go Invictus joined Kimbo' in the lead, while three lengths away came Tenacre, Marjoram and Day Lass. Coming into the straight there was nothing between Kimbo and Invictus ond they were practically together at the last fence. Tenacre, after losing a lot of ground, made a sparkling finish and Invictus passed the post a bare head in; front. Kimbo was a head further back third, while Day Lass was a poor fourth. Merry Way was first to show put from Prince Reno, No Doubt,, Shillong and Icier, Lady Bent and Wharauramgi bringing up the rear. After going a furlong Merry, Way and Prince Reno were almost on terms, while two lengths away came. Shillong, Icier, Lady Bent, Bold Baron and No Doubt. Merry Way was just in front of No Doubt turning into the straight, with Prince Reno,' Bold Baron and Icier most prominent of the others. Merry Way finished two lengths ahead of No Doubt, who was a length and a half in front of Icier. Prince Reno was fourth.

Arvada was first to break the line from an excellent start, Green Linnet and Headmaster being next. At the end of a furlong Headmaster had gone to the front from Arvada and Green Linnet, and at the half-mile Headmaster was in charge from Lady Quex, who had got a run on the inside and drew level with Green Linnet. Racing towards the .straight Green Linnet himself moved up fast, but Headmaster still held the lead, with Lady Quex and Arvada both handy. Lady Quex hit the front in the run home to win by two and a-half lengths from Green Linnet, with a similar distance between second and third.
