('From Our Own Correspondent.) SCHOOL COMMITTEE. ARRANGEMENTS FOR PICNIC. At a meeting of the Normaniby School Committee, held on Monday night, there were present: Mr W. Bennett (chairman), Mrs G. W. Gane, .Messrs W. Burton, J. Howe-Giles, and C. W. Hardway. Apologies for absence were received from the Rev. J. Wa t soil and Mr D. M. Cowie. Advice that capitation had been forwarded was received from the Taranaki'Education Board. The appointment of Mr B. E. Mason as probationary assistant for a further term of -three months was confirmed. Mr C. L. Hay, stationmaster at Norman by, waited upon the committee and [ submitted a schedule of train fares to various localities where a school picnic [might be held. It was decided to hold (the picnic at Opunake on Friday, February 10, leaving by 'train from Nornianbv at about 9 a.m. Arrangements for a supply of cordials, sweets and ’ fruit were finalised. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr W. Palmer for a donation of sweets to the school garden fete at the annual breaking-up ceremony. It was decided to grant the school a holiday for the second day of the Nornianby .show. A request from the jubilee nigger minstrels for use of the school piano for one night’s practise was granted, it also being agreed to accede to the jubilee committee’s request for the use of the piano for the jubilee ball. Members were unanimously agreed that the school’s participation in the forthcoming jubilee celebrations should be a fitting.one and it was left 'to the chairman to co-operate with the headteacher and staff in his direction. The chairman and Mr Howe-Giles were appointed a visiting committee for the month.

JUBILEE BALL. At a meeting held on Friday night preliminary arrangements in connection with the jubilee ball were discussed .by a . good attendance. Air :T. J. Allan occupied the chair and the following committee was appointed: Alessrs J. llowc-Giles (convener), L. Frank lyn, F. Bergessor, B. Hughes, W. Bennett, and C. Franklyn. It was decided to engage the Town Hall and the’ Horticultural Society’s hall for the ball, and to ask the ladies’ committee of the society to undertake the catering. Two marquees are to be erected to accommodate the dancers at supper. Messrs W. Bennett, Jack Dorabroski, H. I. 'Crockor, A. J. Hopcroft, G. Galloway, G. 'Graydon, E. J. Linn, and J. Dombroski were appointed M.’sC. Admission charges were fixed at as 6d double and 2s ’(id and 3s 6d for single tickets. Alessrs E. Gane and A. E-. Linn were appointed a decorations committee. Doorkeepers appointed were Messrs J. A. Archbold, L. Franklyn, A. G. -Smith, and 11. D. Hughes. The matter of engaging orchestras was left to the secretary to report at a further meeting. PERSONAL. Mrs 11. Smith is visiting relatives in Nelson. Mrs E. A. Hurliman has returned from a visit -to New Plymouth. Mr and Airs -0. J. Preston are spending a-holiday at Lake Taupo. Mr and Mrs R. Y. Jackson are on a motoring -tour of the North -Island. Air J. -Graham, of the staff of ‘‘Smith’s Weekly,” Sydney, is visiting -his sister, Mrs L. C. Jurd. Airs -0. Young is an inmate of the Haw-era Hospital, but is reported to -be making favourable progress. Air T. Taylor reutrned on Saturday from Nelson where he attended the teachers’ summer school. Mrs T. Lloyd is visiting Airs -Green at Okaiawa.
