SWIMMING IN TARANAKI

MEETING- OF''CENTRE NO TEAM TO RE! SENT TO' NAPIER A decision not to send a. team to the New Zealand senior swimming championships at Napier was made 'by the Taranaki Swimming Centre at a, meeting hold in New Plymouth last evening. There were present Air F. J. Eggleton. (chairman), Mrs E. Govenlock, Messrs O. H. Stephenson, G. F. Ber-j trail'd, N. Berge, N. P. Lealand, B.j Clavton, F. L. Trueman and Iv. J.j Staunton and Aliss B. Gayton (secreta,rv). Air Staunton thought that as the centre was expecting to he allotted the national meeting in 1935 and expense would preclude the sending of a team .to the South Island next year, the time was ripe for a team to be sent to Napier to show that the province was active. Mr Staunton suggested that the centre could run another carnival to raise further funds and that the personnel ol : the team be a polo seven, 11. St. George for the men’s free style events and handicaps and Miss P. Murray for the ladies’ dive.

Tile question was. discussed 'by the meeting at length. it was admitted that a team should be .sent, hut it -was queried if the pulp team, although improved, were yet good enough. It was decided not to incur the expense that would be necessary, but on Air Eggleton's suggestion the meeting decided to keep in view the sending of a team of intermediates and juniors to the championships, to be held possibly at Auckland, next- year. This, Air Eiggleton. said, would be less expense to the centre and would give experience to swimmers of the province wild were comparatively the best. Mr Eggleton and delegates thought that while it would have been appropriate to have Taranaki represented this year, the carnival to raise funds might injure' the combined clubs’ effort for the paying of the baths improvement levy and might 'undermine the credit balance the centre would require for the national meeting in 1935. The recommendation to send an intermediate and junior team to Auckland in 1931 was pjit in the form of Ci, motion and carried. It was reported that the' total profit for the championship meeting and dance was £33 7s fid. Formal applications' were made for permission for R. Clarke to make an attempt- on the Taranaki senior 100 yard- breaststroke record at Ilawera on Thursday night and for H. St. George to attack the I.oo' yards free style record at, the New Plymouth carnival on Saturday night. Preliminaries in connection with the learn-to-.swim week were discussed. The usual committee was elected, consisting of Messrs W. H Moyes, F. J. Bggleton, P. J. F'laiinagan, G. F. Bertrand and R. Olay ton and Alias B. Gayton, to make arrangements for the timetable. Messrs Bertrand, Elggleton .and Fliannagan were appointed a sub-com-mittee to visit the schools about Friday to discover how many children would bo forthcoming. Efach club will be asked to obtain at least s.ix instructors

A resolution commended All* IT. Anthony for the rescue he carried out at Paritutiv beach on Sunday and promised full support to the move to have the rescue suitably recognised. The application of the Okato Club tor the date of its carnival to be changed to March, 4 in niace of February 11 was granted and Inglewood was allotted February 23' for a, second carnival* The suggested remission of the charge for certificates to school children was left for consideration until after _an Auckland remit on the same subject had been discussed at the annual meeting of the North Taranaki Association
