Belinda’s Letter

Dearest Betsio, —I Have .just made this very nice, little crossover sweatci | and am terribly pleased with it. It is , equally suitable for the very young and the middle-aged and it is so nice ! to find something for the latter that | isn’t hideous. It can be worn over summer frocks to supply that little extra warmth which wc so often need. It will abo be amazingly useful tvorn during the winter under one’s suit. It is knitted in two colours, alternatively —T give the instructions for a 34 inch bust. Materials required; A pair of 14 needles for ribbing; a pair of 12 needles; two ounces of Paton-Bald-win’s Princess Big Ball Floss in beige No. 1976 and loz of the same wool in White. Any other combination of dark anil light would be good. 'Stitches used: A ribbing (lower edge border of sleeves and neck) Ist plain, Ist purl. B tweed stitch (body), Ist row (on wrong side of -work): Slip 1 for the edge *; knit 1, make 1 (by bringing the thread round the needle), slip 1, purlwise. Repeat from * throughout row; 2nd row, knit plain the two stitches that precede the made stitch of the previous row; slip the made stitch; repeat to the end of the row; third row, slip 1 for the- oflg c, then knit together the Ist stitch and the made stitch from the Ist row, make 1, slip 1 purlwise; repeat to end of the. row. Repeat from 2nd row. The 2nd row and 3rd rows are repeated throughout. Change the colour at the 3rd row and always knit 2 rows in each colour. Front: Begin at the lower edge; cast on 130 in the dark colour on the No. 14 needles. Do 3in in ribbing and then divide the work as follows: 75 stitches for the right front, 55 for the left. Leave the left front on a spare needle and work the right front on the No. 12 needles, always alternating two light rows and two dark rows. Keej the underarm edge straight, but de crease one stitch every eight rows at

the neck edge tnrouguout the work. When the whole work is 12in long measured vertically, make the aimholo by casting off five stitches at tho bc|ginning of each of the next two rows | that start at the armhole edge. Then decrease one stiltcli at |fhe; armhole edge in each of the next five roA\ s. This makes a total decrease of 15 stitches for the armhole. The armhole is then knitted straight, but the neck decreases, which have been continued throughout since the top of tho waist ribbing, are still continued until 30 stitches are left. Knit straight on these 30 stitches until the armhole is 7tin deep measured vertically. Then cast off five stitches every time you begin a row at the armholfi edge until all the stitches are east off. For the left front, cast on 20 stitches at the centre edge of the 55 stitches left on the needle. Then make the left front exactly the same as the right. Back: Cast on 130 in the dark avool on the No. 14 needles. Rib for 3in; change the larger needles and continue in tweed stitch. When the work is 12in deep make the armholes by casting off five stitches at the beginning of each of the next four rows. Then decrease one stitch at each end of the needle every row for five row's. Work .straight until the armhole is (Jin ddcp, measured vertically, then cast off 30 stitches at the beginning of each of the next two rows. Cast i off the remaining stitches in the following row. Border: With the dark thread and the fine needles pick up all the stitches round the neck opening. Rib for 10 rows and east off on the wrong side. Do similar borders round the ? armholes. Sew the low'cr edge of the l left front underlap to the top of the > front ribbing. >; I’m afraid I’ve filled the entire leti'tor this week with these directions, i but I know what a very keen knitter ! I you are and I am sure you will be p delighted with this extremely useful ?-little woollie. Ever yours, dearest t Betsie, —Belinda.
