NORTH ISLAND TITLES. MALFROY WINS SINGLES. MISS' WHYTE TAKES LADIES’. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) MASTERTON, Jan. 25. The North Island lawn tennis championships were virtually concluded today in ideal weather. C. E. Malfroy wrested the men’s singles title from the holder, R A. Court. The Moser played a good steady game, but was not in Malfroy’s class. Miss Whyte retained the ladies’ title against Miss ■Howell, who was defeated after a closely contested second set. Results of championship events are: Men’s singles.—i Semi-final: Malfroy beat Lowry, B—-6,8 —-6, 7 —5. .Final: C. E. Malfroy (Wellington) beat GEL. A. Court (Hawke’s Bay), 9—7, 6 —2, 6 —2. Men’s doubles. —Semi-final: Coombe and E. S. Pearce beat Court and K. Dyer, 6 —o, 6—3. Final: D. C. Coombe (Manawatu) and E. A. Pearce (Wellington) beat P. Hawkesworth and G. A. Pearce (Otago). I—6, 5—7, 6—3, 6—2, 6—2. . Ladies’ singles.—Final: Miss M. Whyte (Wellington) beat Miss N. Howell (Hawke’s Bay), 6 —o, 9—7.
Ladies’ doubles. —Semi-final: Misses MaoAssey and Gould beat Misses Bell and Sturrock, 6—3, 6—l. Final: ■Misses M. MacAssey (Wellington) and B. Gould (Canterbury) beat Misses M. Whvte and S. Todd (Wellington), 6 —3, 6—3.
Combined doubles. —Fifth round: Rhodes-Williams and Miss Gould beat Hodder and Miss Nathan, 6 —3, 6—2. The event has not been completed. Girls’ singles.—Final : Miss Bell Payton (Masterton) beat Miss Patricia Riddiford (Masterton), 6—3, 6—4. Handicap finals were iron as follows: Ladies’ singles, R grade, Miss B. Hessell (Masterton) ; ladies’ doubles, A grade, Misses R. G. Bradley and L. Rutherford (Masterton); ladies’ doubles, B grade. Misses J. Rutherford and J. Australian, tennis championship- results are: Men’s singles.—Turnbull defeated Van Ryn (U.S.A.L 6—4, 10—8, 6—2; Allison (U.S.A.) defeated Moon, 6—2, 6 —4, 5—7, 6—o; Gledhill (U.S. A.) defeated Hopman. 3 —6, 2 —6, B—6, 6 —o. 6—3; Vines (U.S.A.) defeated Hassett, 4—6. 6—l. 6—4, 6—l. Men’s doubles. —Vines' and Gledhill defeated Turnbull and Quistj 4; —6. 6—1.. 4—6, 6—3, 9—7.
