SWIMMING CHAMPIONS

TARANAKI TITLES MANY RECORDS LOWERED HAWERA RETAINS BANNER The Taranaki swimming championships were contested at the New.ll.Ymouth municipal baths last night. Both from point view of competition and attendance, the carnival was an outstanding success. Nearly iOUU people paid for admission to the cainival, the gate takings constituting a record. ' A great improvement was noticeable in the standard of swimming, as proved by the fact that eight records were broken, in many instances bv substantial margins. ' “Once again the Taranaki banner for the club, whose members obtain most points at the championship meeting went to Hawera (SGJ points). Fitzi’oy were next with 27 points and New I lymouth third with 14. *■ H. St. George (Fitzroy) was the most successful individual competitor, winning both the 100 and 220 yards senior men’is events m record times. In .each instance the previous record had been held by himself. 1. J. Haughton lowered the oO yards recoid to 26 4-5 seconds. This was probably the best performance of the evening and [the time; comes very close to the Dominion record. L. Charters (Fitzroy) scored something of a surprise victory in the 10J yards intermediate boys. He proved himself very speedy, winning the- race m 67 3-5 seconds, 1 and 1-5 seconds less than the previous record. Charters finished with a magnificent dash which gave him quite a large break on the remainder of the field. Following is a list of new records: Men’s 50 yards.—26 4-5 sec., i. J. Haughton, Stratford (previous record, 27 4-5 secs., G. S. Anderson, Haweia./ Men’s 100 yards.—63 3-0 secs., H. Ht George Fitzroy (previous record, 64' 2-5 sec., H. St. George). Men’s 220 yards.—2- mm. 4o -sec., H St. George, Fitzroy (previous record, 21 mjn. 50 21-5 sec., H. bt. George). , , . , „ Men’s 150 yards backstroke. — Z mm. 26 see., P. 6. Veale, Hawera (previous record, 2 min. 2/ 2-5 see., P. O. Veale). - - , , 'lntermediate boys’ 100 yards.—l min. 7 3-5 sec., L. Charters, Fitzroy (previous record, 1 min. 8 4-5 sec., i. Jobson, Hawera). Ladies’ 50 yards.—34 4-5 sec., Miss K. Donald, Hawera- (previous record, 36 sec., Miss K. Donald).' Ladies’ 50 yards breaststroke.— 44 sec., Miss G. Hay, New Plymouth (previous record, 46 sec., Miss S. Seaver, Hawera). r Intermediate girls’ 50 .yards.—34 o-o sec., Miss V. Carncross, EUtham (previous record, 36 1-5 sec., Miss N. Duckworth, Hawera). Although some of the records mentioned are not yet within New Zealand -standard, the times for the vanous distances are gradually improving "With the exception of the ladies diving, the diving at the championships was poor. However, Miss F. Murray, winner of the ladies’ event, was quite up to Dominion championship standard and her display was a bright relief in the evenings programme. The men’® event produced no diver capable of winning an average provincial championship. Two North and South. Taranaki events were held at the carnival. South won the provincial relay for eight-man teams, . while after a -sternly fought water polo match North forced to a last minute draw, with the score four goals each. The game was one of the best ever seen in Taranaki, being fast and clean and providing good throwing and accurate passing from whistle to whistle. Cohesion of effort was a feature of both sideis’ play. - The warm weather made- conditions ideal for the carnival.

The Mayor of New Plymouth, Mr m. S. Griffiths, presented -to Mr F. J. Eigglet-on, Uhairman of the Taranhki Centre executive, ■ the new Eiannagan Challenge Cup for the- annual open water -.swim from- Kawaroa Park to the East End beach. In returning thanks Mr Ilgglet-on expressed the. deep appreciation of swimmers and swimming patrons to the Borough Council, for providing the new accommodation at the baths. Mr P. T, Eiannagan, donor of the cup, also spoke. The,, carnival . was splendidly -organised by the centre -officials headed by Mr P’’, J. • -Elggleton, chairman, and Miss B. Gay ton, h-on. -secretary. Trueman (F), H. StGeorge- (F). . . South: 11. Lansdale (S)), R-. Girling (SI, A,. D-owdle (H), J. Blyth (H), A. Robson (S), G. Anderson (H), I. Job-s-on (PI), T. J. Haughton (S). Girling made a -break of two- yards f-o-r South but McFarlane picked this up on the following length. The fourth men were swimming level until Gavton went astray and, becoming tangled in the lanes, Post a couple of ! yards. South' held this- and even in- ) creased it a little. When the last men set out it seemed that- it- would he impossible for St. George to catch Pfianghton. He made a- va-liant effort, however, missing by a very narrow margin. ’ REPRESENTATIVE polo NORTH AND SOUTH DRIAW What was perhaps the most exciting polo match ever seen in New Plymouth was the -representative match between North and South Taranaki.. The score, four goals each, was a- fair indication of the game. Neither team was definitely superior, although for some time South were two goals in the lead. (South -gained the ball at the majority of the throw-ins, but this- was balanced by the better team work of the North \ players. • North gained the ball from the first throw-in and gained a few yard's. A general scramble ensued and Thomas emerged with the ball. A beautiful throw gave Campbell the -opportunity •to gain the first blood when he oom- ■ pletelv heafc Yea-tes. -South then took the ball to- within three yards of the goal mouth, whore Rvan was awarded a- penalty, throw for obstruction by Plumtree. He made no mistake and the score was then one goal all. North again returned to the- attack, a scramble taking place m the corner. Thomas again appeared, with the hall and this time notched the goal himself. The -play was even more lively now than before and after passing in the North territory Crossman put the ball past T-oomey into the corner of the -goal. The score was* again even at two goals all. It was now South’s turn to attack and T-oomey was called upon to make two- brilliant saves. The latter put the visitors oni the- defensive and Yeate-s also -guarded 'his fort well. South- again, returned play, but a long throw by Staunton saved a dangerous situation. Half-time was then called. In the second spell Staunton went up to- the forwards, increasing the attack considerably. In the South team Good was replaced by I. Jobs-on. S-outh immediately attacked. Tourney made one go-cd -save, and although the goal mouth seemed crowded with North players Ryan got the ball past them to put his team -one goal in the lead. I From the- tlrrow-in Staunt-on sent the ( {ball well down, but South returned to j the attack. The hall travelled up and t clown several times until Grossman \ made an attempt which . T-o-o-mey deflected over the bar. From a corner tile ball was sent in a- triangle by the South forwards and Ryan again sent it in. This put S-o-uth two- -goals in the lead and it looked black fqi' North. Staunton' made two long throws, but lack of -support allowed South to return to the attack. Toomey made a good save and South were put on the .defence. Yeates made a- wonderful save in warding off a- fast -shot from Thomas but- the latter made another attempt, this time successful. There was little time to go, but North were playing up. Plumtree lost a. g-ood opportunity by swimming with the ball instead of passing it to- Thomas, who- had a sitting -shot. It was a goal thrown away hut lie made amends- a- moment later by throwing the equalising goal just- as time was called. The teams were: North: W. T-oomev lE), K. Staunton /NP). N. Lea land (NP), 0. Plumtree (F), C. McLean- (J?), H. J. Thomas S(F) and O. Oainn-bell (F). I South: M. Good (II), A. Ryan (IT), 3r. Grossman (1). W. Yeates (I), M. Lindsay (1), C. Evans (I), W. Kivell (I). I Mr M. Smale was referee.
