DEPRECIATED CURRENCIES
EFFECTS IN AMERICA MAY MEAN HIGHER TARIFFS SPEEDING UP WORLD PARLEY. DESIRE OF PRESIDENT HOOVER, (United Press Assuciation-By Electric Telegraph U>p> riglit.> Received 9.50 a.m. to-day. WASHINGTON, Jan. 25. President Hoover feels that the United States is faced with the necessity either of increasing her tariff walls or action to gain stability m foreign currencies and it is considered possible that moves will be made for a speeding up of the approach of the World Economic Conference. It was stated from a high administration source that the President desires to avoid major increases in tariff, but feels it' may be necessary unless the world conference can act quickly to bring greater stabilisation to foreign currencies.
• Mr. <• Hoover,- it is stated, believes that only in the past four or five months has the United States felt the reaction from the departure of the various European countries from the gold standard.- .
