CORRESPONDENCE
MATRICULATION RESULTS. (To the Editor.) Sir, —It is evident from the tone of the letter under the nom de plume “Parent,” which was published in. last night’s “Star,” that somebody’sjblueeyed boy, or, maybe, .girl, has, to use “Parent’s” own wording, “thudded” in the recent university entrance examination. Such an outburst, appearing practically upon the heels of the recently published matriculation results, certainly lends colour to the statement. . Being such a keen student of the affairs of the Hawera High. School, “Parent,” no doubt is aware of the fact that, out of the six Taranaki scholarships recently awarded by the University Senate, no less than three were gained by pupils of the Hawera school. Even should “Parent” be aware of this fact, I seriously doubt if he is aware that each of these pupils passed in two languages! So much, for the vaunted absence of a. language teacher at the school. As regards thethinly veiled accusation of cheating levelled at the students of the school, I submit that “Parent” to make no mention of the fact that after the school work has been marked by the pupils it is cheeked by. the teacher. No doubt this last omission was merely an oversight on the part of “Parent.” “Parent’s” surmise re probable results obtained by the local school were a system of accrediting adopted in New Zealand can, ,in my opinion, be aptly described as ‘'the, vague murmurings of an unsound mind.” Such an attack levelled at all connected with the local High School, and evidently fostered by ‘ ‘Parent s own child’s . failure, to pass, the matriculation, were it not deserving of censure, would be beneath contempt, but, maybe, it is’ as “Parent” blithely says, “only human nature.” Thanking you for the space von have allotted: me —I am, etc., , ’ EX-PUPIL.
