GENERAL

Members of 'the Ivaponj|a Brass Band returned from Napier on Sunday evening ami express themselves as very pleased with the trip. The arrangements for the contest were very thorough and the bandsmen speak highly of the hospitality extended to them. The band had the honour, being the one to come from the most distant point, of leading' the monster procession which opened the carnival nci which immediately proceeded tho quickstep competition. Although not meeting with the success which it was hoped for, the band, as already reported. gained third place in the quickstep and "fourth in the selection. For the week ending January 28, 1 workers were engaged under No. -5 unemployment relief scheme, seven being with the Kaponga Town Board ami six with the Kltliain County Council, and the majority in each case being employed by farmers on the “over the fence” plan. The ; weekly allocation of funds from the hoard provided work on the following basis.: Single men, one day three hours, or 10s 4d each; married men up to two children, two and a half da vs or £1 os each : mar ried men with three or.more children, three davs or £1 JOs each.
