Fingland made 238 for th© loss of ■ eight wickets in the first day of the four-day match .against an. Australian XI. The 23,000 spectators paid £I2OO to see a poor display of batting by th 0 Englishmen. The weather was. fine and cool. The wicket was good. Wyatt won the toss. The .game opened brightly, Wyatt scoring fours off Nash’s- first two deliveries. Play then became dull, an hoitr’s batting bringing only 39 runs. Nagel was in particularly good form and bowled nine overs for 7 runs. As in the Victorian game, Wyatt was dismissed leg before wicket in the last over before lunch. He batted 87 minutes. The total before lunch was only 56 and the crowd became sarcastic. ' Sutcliffe gave a poor display, making several lucky snicks. He also gave a chance when 29 to Oxenha.ni at leg off Ironmonger. In two hours 20 minutes Sutcliffe scored 36, the crowd cheering every stroke ironically. The century was brought up in 145 minutes. Two ruiJK were added, when Pataudi was clean howled. He hatted for an hour and hit two boundaries. Runs came at a funeral pace. Sutcliffe was labouring dreadfully, as in the Adelaide game. The 150 was readied in 195 minutes’ play. A section of the crowd then commenced counting out Sutcliffe. At 182 Leyland miss-liit to mid-off. He batted 77 minutes and hit four boundaries. The score was unaltered when Sutcliffe skied the hull to cover and was easily caught. He batted 214 minutes and hit five fours.

Wickets, then fell quickly, the batsmen attempting to force matters, hut Oxenham .was_bowling well. Brown brightened matters by clean hitting. Oxenham turned the ball well, howling 20 overs, six being maidens, and taking five wickets for 47 runs.
