NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL

ART GALLERY AND MUSEUM. CONTRACT FOR BUILDING. (By £.»legrapb—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 16. Within three years of March 31 next the erection of the National Art Gallery and the Dominion Museum is to be completed. The board of trustees this afternoon signed a contract with the Fletcher Construction Co., Ltd., for the work at a cost of £1.62,218, the board reserving the right to omit a portion of the building of an approximate value of £20,000. The decision is dependent upon the finance being available at the end of 12 months.

The highest tender was £187,060. The total cost of the scheme with preliminary and other expenses will he approximately £185,000. The board has cash in hand £57,000, . subscriptions promised and expected are conservatively estimated to yield £13,000, and with interest and a Government £ for £ subsidy the hoard believes it is assured of £149,000 being available. It is anticipated that as the work progresses citizens will he inspired to make further contributions. The board was influenced in its decision to go ahead by the fact that the undertaking would stimulate the building industry generally. The only impoi’ted materials to he used will be steel and copper.
