Phelps (England) retained the world’s professional sculling championship by defeating Major Goodsell (Australia)" by a length and taking 17 minutes *6.2 seconds for the fourthousand metres of the course. Phelps came from behind in the last 200 metres, after being four lengths behind ,at the turn. It was the first time "in the history of the event that it was rowed around a turn.
