subface; neap, rangiotu. FOUNDATIONS AFFECTED. PALMERSTON N., Sept. 3. As a result of the recent flooding of the Foxton-Palmerston North highway two and a half tmi'les of bitumen road between Hamilton’s Line, Tiakitahuna, and Rangiotu has been extensively damaged, and will probably have tp be rqlaid. • An inspection wais made of a few chains of the road, yesterday, when it was found that the surface has been extensively cracked. A close inspection of the whole of the affected portion of the read will not be made until the floor waters hfive completely receded and the silt covering on the road has been worn .off by traffic. The foundations of the road are reported to be in a waterlogged condition on account of the swampy and peaty nature of the ground on which it is built. Yesterday when heavy lorries were passing over the road the surface was seen to spring several inches.. On account of the danger of further damage to the surface, traffic exceeding four and a half tons gross weight is prohibited from using the road. It is expected that it will take at least, two weeks for the road foundations to dry out.—“ Dominion” . Service.
