A commandant and 16 men were blown to atoms —even their garments could not be discovered —in a series of mysterious munitions explosions in a fortress at Rhident, on the outskirts of the capital. The, worst explosion occurred among stored naval mines, which wrecked many houses. A j>iece of shell penetrated the wall of a, cobbler’s, workshop and cut off the cobbler’s, left foot.
