OVERTIME RATES REFUSED
WATERSIDE WORK DISPUTE LOWER PAY NOT ACCEPTED DELAY WITH AUCKLAND CARGO. (By Telegraph—Fresa Association.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 2. Owing to the waterside workers refusing to work overtime on the Union Company’s cargo steamer Waipiata the vessel’s departure for Wellington and southern ports was postponed- unti. noon to-morrow. At 5 o’clock this evening nearly 300 tons .of cargo was to- be loaded into the vessel and the departure was fixed for 9 o’clock. The men, however, refused. 1 to return after the tea hour to complete the loading. No explanation was given, but it is stated their refusal is because the overtime rate under the new wage conditions is s£d less than under the old rates.
REFUSAL AT WELLINGTON. LOADING PLAN INTERRUPTED. WELLINGTON, Sept. 2. The Federal steamer Cambridge, which arrived at Wellington to-day from Lyttelton to continue loading for Britain. was again delayed by the waterside workers. . When the men were working during the afternoon they were told they would be required to work overtune. They refused to do so except at the old rates of wages.
RESUMPTION AT DUNEDIN UNLOADING OF PHOSPHATES. SPECIAL RATE ARRANGED. DUNEDIN, Sept. 2. The watersiders resumed unloading the Fiscus phosphates .this morning, the dispute being settled by an agreement to pay the special rates provided for handling phosphates in windy weather.
