ATHLETIC OVERWHELMED

PATEA’S SCORE OF 35 TO NIL. RUNAWAY WIN THROUGHOUT. Patea scored a runaway victory by 35 points to nil against Athletic at Patea. Only on two occasions did Athletic look like scoring, and their backs were overwhelmed by the speed, accurate passing and initiative of the blue rearguard. Forward there was only one team in it, and the ability of the Patea forwards to combine with their backs saw Robinson, Wills and company finish off several fine back passing rushes. Just before half-time Malcolm retired with an injured leg. Graham took his place, buy, as McLean was injured shortly afterwards, Athletic fielded only 14 men during the whole of the second spell. Athletic won the toss, Patea kicking off against "the sun. An exchange of kicks saw the ball go- out to halfway. Following the line-out playsettled on the Athletic side of halfway- until Gudgeon sent to Bourke, to J. Crawford, to Edwards, who was well tackled by Cairncross, and a pass to Adams was forward. From the Patea side of half-way Gudgeon broke away and sent to Richards, who was palpably off-side. Athletic went away in a determined rush from the kick-out and were nearly over, a knock-on spoiling a certain score. Malcolm was injured and lia-cl to retire, Graham taking his place. A line-out followed the scrum and Morrissey tried to drop-kick a goal. Paterson fielded and kicked past half-way, the bounce favouring Edwards, who was going at top speed and, taking the ball Tn liis stride, sent to the speedy Adams when tackled by Tuki. Edwards converted and half-time sounded with the score: Patea 16, Athletic 0. Paterson fielded Morrissey’s kick-off and reached touch at half-way. From the line-out Edwards secured and sent Adams on a. dash down the line. Passing in when collared, the ball reached Richards, who galloped across. Edwards again converted. Patea 21, Athletic 0. Patea were now definitely assuming superiority and a passing rush from beyond luilf-way broke down a few vards short of the line when Adams lost the ball. Adams, Edwards and Gudgeon handled for the latter to send Robinson over. Edwards again converted. Patea. 26, Athletic 0. Athletic were nearly over when the forwards rushed play to the Patea line following the kick-out, but were repulsed and Patea attacked, Canncross marking when things looked dangerous. Back came Patea to within two yards of the reds’ line where the ball went out. From the line-out Richards sc-Ored well out. Edwards kick bounced infield from off the bar. Patea 29, Athletic 0. Patea kept up the pressure and, from a scrum five yards out, Gudgeon sent to Bourke, to Crawford, to Adams for the last-named to cut in and score between the posts. Edwards missed. Patea 32, Athletic 0. Patea were again away •from the kick-out and Robinson was hauled down right on the line, while Grotty lost the ball a moment later when_ a trv looked certain.
