HAY AND ENSILAGE

TOKAORA COMPETITION. PRAISE ERiOM JUDGES. ■Commendation of the samples of hay and ensilage seen during the annual series of competitions in the 'Tokaora district yesterday was expressed by the judges, Messrs O. T. Parry and J. T. Clague, of Manaia. The stacks were well built and the pits constructed in such a way as to almost completely avoid waste, a point, said Mr Parry that should be the said of every dairy farmer. The absence of waste was specially noticeable in the silos. He commented specially on tho excellent condition of the silos at the farms of Mr 11. E. Batten and Mr J. A. AlcCallum, which ran one another very close and showed only one-half point difference in the aggregate. IMr Batten gained a point on material which had been cut just at the right stage, but lost a half on the waste. The quality was level. It was necessary in the silo, he said, that it bo built, up “saucer shape.” 'The judges made special mention of the'stack of ensilage at Mr Lavery’s farm, while the pits at Mr Phillips’ and at Mr 11. Ward’s were just in the condition necessary to enable them to see the material right to the bottom.

The results were as follow:—

PIT ENSILAGE. Maximum: Alaterial, 20; quality, 50; cover, 15; freedom from waste, 15; k total, 100.

The party was entertained at the hall by members of the recently formed branch of the W.D.F.U. and this was acknowledged by Mr T. J. Allan, act-ing-president of the Tokaora branch of the Farmers’ Union.* He also thanked the judges for their good and careful work and useful comments.

Among the observers present were about 30 boys of the Manaia District High iSchool, under Mr D. G. Sherson. They took notes and appeared keenly interested in the judges’ comments. IMr Jcllyman, of Messrs Bennett and Sutton’s staff, who was with the party, donated an ensilage and hay knife for competition next year.
