TEAMS IN MID=WEEK PLAY DEFEAT OF CANTERBURY SOUTHLAND’S VICTORY. {By Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, July 27. A Rugby match between Southland and Canterbury to-day resulted in a win for Southland by 28 points to 5. The-weather was tine and cold and the ground* was heavy after recent rain. The game was very ragged in the first spell but brightened in the second, when Southland ran all over The visitors and put on 19 points. Canterbury’s only try was scored in this spell. , , The Southland forwards, although a lighter pack, were too good all round, and at times' played the opposition on their own. 'The Canterbury lacks were disappointing. Tries for Sputnland were scored by Geddes, Grant, McKay, Donnelly, ‘ Murphy, Fowls and Barry. .McKay and Porter converted one each, McKay also kicking a penalty goal.

Speed, tactics and combination enabled the Wellington Rugby representatives to score a decisive victory ..over Wairarapa in a match at Masterton to-day by 26 points to 3. GOLDEN BAY BEATEN. NELSON, July 27. The Bush Union touring Rugby team defeated Golden Bay-Motueka at Motueka by 11 points to 3. Play in the first half was scratchy but attractive football was provided in the second. For Bush Mahoney, Oliver and Reeves were the best forwards, while McCarthy, Olivant (full-back) and Mills were prominent in the backs. For Golden Bay-Motueka Holm wood, Gillispie (backs), Leitch and Dando (forwards) were the best players. Bush won the majority of the scrums and gave the backs good chances: in the second half. Reeves, Welsh and Harvey scored tries for the winners, Reeves converting one. Dando scored a try for the losers. PRIMARY SCHOOLS’. PLAY KAWERiA WINS CHAMPIONSHIP Defeating Stratford at E'ltham by 1.0 points to nil in the final, the Hawora Main School fifteen won the South Taranaki primary schools’ Rugby competition yesterday and the link'liorn Gup.
