BUST OF EX=PREMIER

ARGUMENT AT CANBERRA. DISPLAY IN SENATE CHAMBER. The tedium of proceedings in the Federal Senate at Canberra was temporarily relieved last week when Senator Dunn (New South Wales) entered the chamber carrying a curiouslyshaped brown paper parcel. Having assured himself of the attention of members he unwrapped a plaster bust of file former Premier of Now South Wales, Mr. Lang, which ho placed in a prominent position on his deck. A murmur of mingled amusement and protest arose from the Government benches, and Senator H. Hays walked across tho chamber with a dunce’s cap of white paper,' which he set on the head of the bust. Senator Dunn angrily brushed it off. Senator Thompson, who sits opposite Senator Dunn, asked the Presidents Senator Kingsmill: “Must my susceptibilities be injured by a very questionable 1 statue of a very dubious subject?”. Senator Ivingsmill replied that a senator was entitled to exercise bis individual right, provided the proprieties were not infringed. Senator Johnston: If each member can bring his joss here to worship the place would soon be in an objectionable condition. (Laughter.) After a short interval Senator Thompson protested that the bust was objectionable to him personally. The president then ordered its removal under the Standing Orders, which require that no member may do anything offensive' or objectionable” to another member. . , , Senator Millen: This is not a rogue s gallery. (Renewed laughter.) A. motion of dissent from the pi esident’s ruling, moved by Senator Rae, was negatived by 1-3 votes to a, and Senator Dunn thereupon handed the bust to an attendant, who removed it from the chamber.
