CRUELTY TO A BULL
MAORI SENT TO GAOL. ATTACK WITH A SLASHER. /by Telegraph- ess Association.» OPOTIKI, June 1. Cruelty to a bull resulted in a Maori, Nepia Porikapa, being sentenced to six months’ imprisonment in the Opotiki Police Court ito-day. Sergeant Millar, who prosecuted, said accused was the owner of a small farm. The bull concerned, in a fight with another bull, got entangled in a fence. Accused rushed at it with a heavy slasher, as -sharp as a razor, cutting the animal’s tail nearly off, and -inflicting other severe wounds. Witness said the case was the worst one of cruelty to an animal he had known. The evidence as to the animal’s injuries was corroborated by T. D. Urquhart, stock inspector, who expressed doubts as to whether the animal would recover. The Bench said'the crime was a fiendish one, and expressed regret that corporal punishment could not be inflicted.
