ST. JOHN’S INSTITUTE
YOUNG- PEOPLE S ASSEMBLY On Wednesday evening the St. John’s (Hawera) Young People’s Institute held its third meeting of the season. There was a largo attendance in spite of the inclement weather. An attractive programme had been arranged including the following musical items: Pianoforte duet, by Misses V. Miles and V. Lord; pianoforte solo. Mr Crawford; flute solo, Master lan Taylor; vocal duet, “When Song is Sweet” Misses M. Lamb and Q. Eovson. Two amusing recitations- entitled “Father William” and “A Slum Girl’s Version of tbe story of Rled Riding Hood” wore contributed by Miss M. Thomson and Miss M. Miles respectively.
The main feature of the evening was an interesting travel talk on Egypt and Palestine, given by Mr J. H. Fletcher. The speaker illustrated his remarks with a series of lantern slides. Many of the places shown were scenes of great historical: and Biblical interest. The following speakers were selected to take part in the debate “Homemade Music v. Wireless,” which is to take place at the next meeting: Misses R. -Duff. A. Glenn and M. Miles and Messrs B. Watts, Cl Lacy and J. Clapham.
