When making his British amateur mile record run in the Oxford and A.A.A. team’s match the New Zealander Lovelock urged his pacemaker to greater efforts and ran the first quarter-mile in 57sec. and covered the final quarter alone in 59sec. Thus he did half the distance in 1.56. unprecedented in a mile race and compared with Ladoumergue’s best laps of 2.2. when he made- the world record oi 4.9 1-5. Lovelock’s time of 4min. 12sec. lowered the amateur mile of 4inin. 13.1 sec. set bv R. H. Thomas last year.
