LOWER FEES FOR ’PHONES

RURAL PARTY LINES. REDUCTION BY ONE HALF. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 2G. In announcing the reductions in postage rates the Hon. A. Hamilton, Post-master-General added that it might be considered that some reduction should be made in telephone rentals. He had given this matter careful attention, but was unable to make any substantial reduction in this connection. He had, however, decided to make a small concession to certain rural party line subscribers as many country subscribers, owing to their isolation, were paying rental beyond their capacity. He had decided for the present financial year to fix the rate for these subscribers at half the existing rate with a minimum of £lO. This concession would amount to approximately £SOOO yearly. So far as the telephone service generally was concerned he would like to remind subscribers that New Zealand enjoyed the cheapest service in the English-speaking world.
