During a temporary break in the bank of clouds extending over the Egmont National Park this morning the mountain was revealed clothed in a mantle of sparkling white. The heaviest fall of snow occurred on Tuesday, which was perhaps the coldest day on record for many years, and the motor road to Dawson Falls was liberally coated. On the slopes of Fantham’sj Peak a great mass of snow swirled and eddied into the gullies and the new ski track was completely covered. In some of the sheltered localities in the bush the snow-laden branches of trees and fronds of ferns presented a remarkable scene. That a hare can travel at a speed of up to at least 40 miles an hour was demonstrated' recently. One of the cars carrying the judges for the Courtenay and Malvern root crop competition disturbed a hare near Annat. The animal kept ahead of the car for over half a mile, in Which distance the machine was speeded up to 40 miles an hour. Still the hare, which on the gravel road could scarcely travel at its fastest, kept in front. In one final burst the car caught up to the fleeting animal, which was lucky to dodge one of the front wheels as it swerved toward a gorse fence. An unusual accident occurred on the Wairoa Road last week when a heavy lorry returning to Rotorua from Taraweriv collided with a young deer. The animal, a young doe, suddenly leaiped across the road in front of the oncoming vehicle and was killed instantly. An older doe, apparently the mother, jumped across the road at the same moment, but owing to its superior speed escaped unharmed. Investigation showed a well-worn track which apparently had frequently been used by deer corning down from the bush on the far side of the road to the adjacent Blue Lake.
