EMPIRE GIRL GUIDES

TWENTY=FIRST BIRTHDAY HAWERA OBSERVANCE BOOK AND TOY DRIVE. COMMEMORATION SERVICE. During this week, the members of the (Girl Guido Movement in the British Empire are celebrating tkeir twenty-first birthday. It is the wish of the Chief Scout and Chief Guide, Loicl and Lady Baden-Powell, that the week should be devbted to special service for others; and it is this spirit which is characterising the commemoration week throughout the Empire. iSoutU Taranaki Guides have mapped out. a busy week, and many forms of special service are being carried out by the girls. Trees are being planted in public parks and good turns of many lands are being quietly and unostentatiously performed. The Hawera Guides are not behind in their wish to make the week a happy ono for others. On Thursday and Friday a house to. house canvass will be held with the object ot collecting books, periodicals and toys. The books will ultimately find their way to some of the town’s deserving onjeets, namely the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union Library for the backblocks and the Toe H Hospital Library. The toys are to be sent to the Rev. Fieldcn Taylor for distribution to the poor children in the. Wellington Province in whom he is so greatly interested. The Guides respectfully ask the help and co-operation of householders in their desire to do their “good turn” to others. It is felt that mauy people have books which have accumulated through the years. Periodicals are especially asked for,. as these are much prized by the hospital patients whose library Toe H is sponsoring. Both books and toys will be repaired by the girls before being handed over, should such repair be necessary. The girls will start their house -to house canvass on Thursday after school hours, but so great is the area to be covered that the work may take them into next week. On Saturday' permission has been granted them to plant trees, of commemoration in the Naumai Native Park. It is intended to plant a rimu, kowhai, totara, and pohutukawa. Other activities include a concert at the Old Men’s Home this evening, when a jolly programme of campfire, songs, stories, music and dance will be given. On Sunday afternoon at iSt. Mary’s Church, Hawera, a commemoration service is to be held, at which Guides will be present from Opunake, Manaia and Ha-wera. The Rev. Whitby James will conduct the service, and Mr Webb, organist of St. Mary’s, will preside at the organ. A very special invitation is given to members of the general public who are interested in the Girl Guide movement. The service, which is the same as that which is being held throughout the Dominion and the Empire, will commence at 2.30 p.m. The Guides will form up in procession, with their colours, outside the Winter Show Buildings, at 2 p.m., and will be joined by the Hawera .Scout Troop and by the Cubs. The Hawera Brownies will join the procession at the church. An impressive part of the service will be the reception of the Guide and Scout colours which will remain at the altar until the service is finished.

Owing to the great difficulties of transport, the Patea Local Association have not been able to see their way to bring tlieir Guides down to Hawera on Sunday afternoon, but their commemoration service will be held in Patea, They will be joined by the Alton -Guides who are a branch company of Patea.

Many 7 friends of the movement have put their cars at -the disposal of Guides for the Sunday commemoration service, but ’ Opunake and Manaia local executives will still be pleased to hear of anyone who will aid in bringing the girls into Hawera on Sunday next.
