June 23—Egmont-Wanganui H.U • notes and comments. (By “Maecenas.”) The only race meeting this week is that of the South Canterbury Jockey Club, to be held on Saturday next. * ' * * * [Last season Paris gave indications of developing into a useful jumpei. As he is being sent to Ellershe from Invercargill for the (treat Northern Steeplechase, a journey that is very costly when compared with the prizes of to-day, Owner W. T. Hazlett must be convinced that Paris lias a firstclass chance up north.

• * * * * The win of [Landmark in laet Saturday’s Waikato Steeplechase, and the fact that the stablemate Make Up was not started in the cross country race has made matters in connection with the Great Northern Steeplechase more complicated. Which will carry the Cony colours in that event, or will both start P

The acceptances for the Great Northern Steeplechase, the Cornwall Handicap and the Great Northern Hurdles close) on Friday next. The appearance of same may throw some light on the intentions of owners that have horses engaged in both big jumping events. * * * * *

Cmaclian followed up his Eiguront success by ’heating a good class' field of hurdlers at Te Rapa last Saturday. While the form of Cmaclian is pleasing coo much notice should not be taken of the moderate displays of some of those horses which Oruachan beat and they are likely to show better form after Saturday’s gallop. * * * * *

Last year Little Doubt improved very much as the result of racing, but just when his admirers were expecting his peak form he suddenly went back. Spelled for a few weeks Little Doubt has raced well during the last few weeks, and his victory last Saturday shows that he is progressing well and is likely to make a bold bid for victory in the coming Cornwall Handicap. A couple of years ago Paddon was a good performer on the flat and went particularly well when the race track was soft. His success in the Maiden Hurdles at Te Rlapa last Saturday was nothing to enthuse over, but it showed that Paddon can jump. This gelding is engaged in the Great Northern Hurdles, but is hardly experienced enough for such, a difficult contest. * * * fr

The Tiger is brilliant and with 7.9 in the Members’ Handicap at the com-

ing meeting of the Auckland .Racing Club is reasonably handicapped; but

as tlie ground a.t> Ellerslie in June is usually very soft the ex-liack may not see out a solid six furlongs.

The connections of Gay Court looked on that gelding as unbeatable on the first day of the Wanganui meeting. He did not begin quite so well as several of his opponents and at the home turn was very wide out. Gay Court

literally flew over the final stages of the race and was very unlucky to suffer defeat. He claims an engagement in the Jervois Handicap at Ellerslie, and if he goes on correctly will be very hard to beat there. •* * * * *

Fernden claims an engagement in the coining Great Northern Hurdles, but as lie is hot well seasoned over jumps

could have little chance in such a race. However, Fernden shows promise as a hurdler and, if sent north, is entitled to respect in the Penrose Hurdles, in which he lias the handy weight of 9.12. '*•**■**

Royal Bengal has won only three hack events, that carried limited prize money, and he is thus eligible for hack races* still. Royal Bengal was not nominated for the Jervois Handicap (hack conditions) to be run on the opening day of the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting, but he figures amongst the good class sprinter in the Members’ Handicap.

Cruaclian is not engaged in the coining Great Northern Hurdles, but figures amongst the nominations for other hurdle events to be run at the. same meeting.

Last year Easterly proved a big disappointment at Ellerslie. This year she appears to be in better racing condition and has won three hurdle races m succession. As Easterly finished on better than all her opponents in each contest i£ draws, attention to her chance under the nice weight of 9.12 in next month’s Great Northern Hurdles. In the past the upright jumps at Ellerslie have beaten Easterly, but she is now fencing with more confidence.
