S.I. DAIRY ASSOCIATION

REMITS FOR CONFERENCE. DIFFERENTIAL GRADING PAYMENTS. The principal remits to be submitted to the South Island Dairy Association conference to be held in Dunedin o.’i June 2 *re as follows: That the Milk Grading Regulations recently enacted be amended so that it will be compulsory for factory companies to make differential payments to suppliers according to the grade of milk. That this onference, recognising the urgent heed for improvement in_. the quality of much of the Dominion’s cheese, requests the Dairy Division and the Dairy Produce Board to take immediate steps with the view of bringing into operation, as from the commencement of next season, a national scheme of premium payments for quality cheese, based on the grading points, a levy to be imposed on all export cheese from the Dominion to provide the funds necessary for the purpose. That this conference 'being of the opinion that the restrictions placed on the free operation of exchange by the Order-in-Council, dated December 22, 1931, are a grave injustice to the primary producers and seriously opposed to the national interests, strongly urges the Government to cancel the Order without further delay. That consideration be given by the Conference to the report brought down by the committee appointed at tlie National Dairy Conference last June, in connection with the administration of the industry. All the above remits are submitted bv the executive.

That in order to obtain and utilise to the full the knowledge gained by' Massey College research, it is the opinion of this conference that managers of factories should attend the college for one week’s practical and theoretical instruction, and since expense may be a deterrent preventing many of the smaller South Island factories seeing their way to afFord it, and it is essential that all may participate equally, it is recommended that the expenses of managers be paid by the Dairy Produce Board out of the levy collected on exported produce.— Awarua Dairy Factory Co.. Ltd. That the cost to the industry of the Dairy Produce Board is far in excess of the value of the services received in return, and that the Government be requested to have the board abolished. —Momona Dairy Factors Co., Ltd. That one vat cheese factories be exempted from the Milk Grading Regulations. —Switzers Dairv Factorv Co., Ltd.

That representations be made to the Government to have the railway freight on cheese reduced. —Tuatapere Dairy Factory Co., Ltd.
