A human skull and other parts of a skeleton were unearthed by reliei workers engaged on excavation work at Sturges Park, Otaliuhu, on Thursday. The condition of the remains, which, unfortunately, were broken by the workers’ tools, indicated that they had been buried in the distant past. The top of the skull was unusually long and Hat, with a low, receding forehead. Parts of the jaws recovered intact were complete with strong, even teeth. The remains were uncovered in a scoria stratum about 3ft below the surface of the highest cone above the crater. The crater is said to have been a pa in the earliest Aiaori days. Tribal wars are said to have been incessantly in this vicinity, and the spot where the skeleton was discovered is commonly believed to have been a burial ground. A complete skeleton was unearthed in the same locality about three years ago and is now in the Auckland Museum. From the evidences of burial rites then unearthed these remains were believed to be those of a Maori of high rank. The skull had a distinct fracture, indicating that death had been met in battle and caused by an early Maori weapon.
