FIFTEEN MILES UP

British Balloon Project

TWO pioneers of British aviation are eomplet- "*■ ing plans to reach the greatest altitude ever attained by man (says the “Daily Mail”). A balloon, the largest the world has seen, is being built secretly at Rochester, Kent, England, by Mr Eustace and Mr Oswald Short, partners of the firm whose metal flying-boats and seaplanes are in use in all parts of the world. In 1909 the firm designed and built the aeroplane in which Colonel J. T. C. MooreBrabazon won the “Daily Mail” prize of £IOOO for the first circular mile flown in a British aeroplane.

Mr Oswald Short said recently: “We shall j probably take a third passenger who will be an | expert in scientific research, and we hope to discover some of the secrets of .-tho-upper- a-ir 15 miles or more above the earth. Nothing has yet been decided c-oncerning when we shall start. ’ ’

The greatest height attained by man is the 10 miles reached in May of last year by Professor Piccard and his assistant, Dr. Kipfer, who ascended from Augsberg, Bavaria, and •came down in the Austrian Tvrol.
