ELECTRIC POWER SUPPLY

SOUTH TARANAKI AREA. BOARD’S ADMINISTRATIVE WORK The monthly meeting of the South Taranaki Electric Rower Board was held J u Hawera last evening. In the absence of the chairman (Mr. .J. B. Murdoch) Mr. L. A. Bone presided and also in attendance were Messrs. D. J. Hughes, J. L. Snowdon, E. Dong, E. A. Washer, A. J. Gibbs, E. Parsons, N. Q. Innes, E. A. Pacey, the secretary (Mr R. P. Baigent), engineer (Mr. T. R. Overtoil) and board solicitor (Mr. J. Houston). formal application, was received from Mr. C. V. Davies, of Otakeho, for permission to operate a private electric fight plant, lor which tne approval of the \\ annate West County Council already had been granted. The engineer explained that the plant was in operation on Mr. Davies’ farm but according to the regulations the owner was required to obtain a permit simply to ensure that the service in no way conflicted with the board’s lines of reticulation. it was resolved that the board offer no objection to the plant being operated and that the permit be granted. A request for assistance on the occasion of a ball to commemorate the switching on of electric power to the district was received from the Mokoia Public Hall society, the engineer remarking that the assistance requested would no doubt entail the loan of coloured lights, wiring and current free of charge. In reply to the chairman Mr. Overton estimated that it would be two to three weeks before the group contract at -Mokoia was finished ready for the switching on of power and light. On the motion of Mr. Washer the matter was left in the hands of the engineer.

The following report <jf the engineer for the month of January was adopted: "Units generated, i3<,itH) compared with 226,3/0 for the corresponding period the previous year. Maximum demand, 810 k.w. as against k.w an increase of 00 k.w. L nits purchased from the Government 0i,402. llie Vickers-Better engine ran three hours at different periods. Constructional work on Main South Road to Kakararnea lias been completed and a main switch fitted. It is iioped that supply will be taken by the Patea Borough Council next week. At Manaia, on the South Road, low tension lines were extended 28 chains on high tension poles and a new low tension line erected m lvaipi Street as far as Mr. George’s. In various parts of the district services have been erected as ioliows: Manaia, on three-phase, Ketemarae Road, one two-phase, Arthur Street, Hawera, one three-phase, High Street, Hawera, one three-phavse, including tiie erection of nine service poles. Ono service line was constructed for Mr Wells, Ketemarae Road. On Turuturu Road to the .railway settlement the staff erected 11 main line poles, fitted extensions on two poles, completed 40 chains of new 11,(100 voltline and erected one 25 k.v.a. transformer with control fuses; dismantled the transformer at Glover Road corner, fitted fuses on service lines, doubled copper on existing low tension lines, cleared trees overhanging lines and examined all fuses, joints, etc. From Sutherland Road, from lvaraka Street, Manaia, to the end the line the staff fitted poles for 11,000 volt lines and completed 180 chains of same, doubled copper on 85 chains of low tension, fitted one set of isolating links, one 16 k.v.a. and one 20 k.v.a. transformer. Ju Karaka Street we completed 18 chains.of 11,000 volt line. In order to give better service in Manaia the I I ,000 volt line was extended in Taulmri Street, another isix pel os and a double pole transformer structure erected to accommodate a 40 k.v.a. transformer. In Hunter Street, Hawera, we completed 17 chains of 11,000 volt lines, fitted one 56 k.v.a. transformer, dismantled three sets of temporary line fuses and elected an isolating switch. On South Road between Hawera and Mamba were removed five sets of temporary loses' and an air-break switch and fitted the latter at the corner or Ketemarae Road. Lines which were temporarily secti-onalised during reconstruction wore joined through. On Glover Road we ’ built double pole transformer structure, erected one 100 k.v.a. transformer and re-arranged service line t-o supply Hawera Dairv Company. “The following additional sections of reticulation have been changed over from 5,00!) to 11.000 volts: Kgmont Street. Camberwell Road. Turuturu Road. Waihi Road. Glover Road. Ketemarae Road, Wirihana Road,

Denby Road, Nolan Road, Hauroto Road' -Ohawe .Beach Road, Rainie Road, Winks Road, and the South Road from Denby Road to Manaia. Seventy-two permits were issued ior two new installations, two re-wiring, 65 alterations and additions and three for temporary work. Fifty-three inspections were made. Areas on Mangapoua, Fraser and Austin Roads were canvassed; but the results do not (show payable returns. Mokoia district has been canvassed in the vicinity of the township and factory. Allowing a revenue of £6O j>er annum from the factory a payable load is offering; but if the factory does n-ot instal power the percentage to revenue to capital would only be 13.4 poi cent. The capital expenditure including financial assistance would be approximately £I2OO. ‘ A number of enquiries have been attended as received from other parts of the district.’’
