NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “ Maecenas. ”j

Tlu- attendance on the opening eav of tlu: Wanganui Jockey Club-s meeting was quite up to expectations and considering the limited sized bekls on hand the totalizator returns were satisfactory, despite Lhe .substantial decOne. # * *

The Australian-bred Conjuror 11. made bis first return to Owner-Trainer ,). C’lavle. last Thursday. However, .fits win was. not impressive and Ruler \Y - H Bowden must be given credit lor Ids artistic handling of C-onjuror I .. which went far towards assisting the gelding to victory. ■ * * * * *

At- Wanganui last Thursday Royal Acr<- jumped some ol the fences m dashing style. hut at others he lost a lot of ground. Had Royal Acre jumped well throughout lie must ha\<* won. * * * *

High Faintin' looked well and Trainer F. Tilley expected the gelding to run well in the chief handicap at"Wanganui hut lie got into serious trouble that ruined any chance he may have possessed. * * * * *

The Tiger was backed down to less than even money for the Retro Hack last Thursday. He soon showed out prominently, hut Haulbowline was always with him and the torrid pace set by the pair had them, well beaten over the final stages.

Gonestra has been working well at Wanganui and her connections expected the filly to pay a dividend last Thursday, but a bad run extinguished any. chance she liia.v have possessed. * * * * *

Considering the excellent performances registered by Shrewd at the late meeting of the Elgmont Racing Club, his dividend in last Thursday’s Earle Stakes was really a false one. There was nothing in the nature of luc-k about the win as Shrewd scored in convincing stv.le. *‘* * * *

Track watchers expected Pomp to beat Hunting Cry and win the Flying Handicap last Thursday. The pair ran a fast five furlongs, but over the last half furlong were slowing up pereeptahlv and View Halloo won easily. * • * * * *

At one stage of the Petre Hack run at Wanganui last Thursday The Tiger was anything up to 20 lengths in front of Barba can, but although the race was only six furlongs Barbacan put in such a great run that she got up to win nicely, although the margin was not a. big one. On the same track last spring Barbacan unwound a similar great run to finish second. * * * * *

Davistock was made an “odds on” favourite for the Maiden Race at Wanganui, and at the finish was too good for the opposition. At one stage Dnvidstock was not well placed and had/ to race his way to the front ill rough a narrow opening. * * ■* * *

The Arausio filly Fairy Girl covered more ground than any of her opponents at Wanganui last Thursday, and as she finished a close fourth it would appeal- that had she covered less ground she must have paid a dividend. * # * * *

Hampden got a very bad run over the earlv stages of the Juvenile Handicap at Wanganui and at the straight entrance his position looked hopeless.. With a great run Hampden got up to boat the tiring Furlong. * * 4f * *

Hunting Cry did not finish on last Thursday as well as his trainer exported . It is stated that Hunting Cry will he st ill, to Australia shortly.
