accident to train. CRASHED INTO' TRUCK. j WANGANUI, Oct. 25. - Skidding on vails, which had been made slippery by a shower of ram, the engine of the 4.'12i p.m. tram froni Wanganui to Marten yesterday crashed into ai truck on the Okoia hill, near Forded, damaging and derailing it. None of the passengers was hurt, the Auckland express was delayed two hours at Morton and traffic on the Wanganui line was temporarily dislocated. . After the Marion train had left Wanganui yesterday afternoon showers of rain fell, making it impossible for the engine to draw the train up the hill, and it was divided into two portions. The mishap occurred when the engine was returning for the second portion. After taking the first part, up the hill, it was decided to reverse a train from Marion and convey the 40 passengers from) the damaged train) to it, but this train was unable to climb the other side of the Wangaehu hill, and some trucks and carriages had to be left behind.
Fiftv travellers from the slow train from Marion and a number from the 8.20 p.m. express were taken to Wanganui from Fbrdell by car. The line was cleared in the early hours of this morning and traffic is running on the normal schedule. During the night snow fell at Fordell. — “Dominion’’ Service.
