“It seems wrong that man who lias saved a little money and is forced to accept relief money should be penalised by being prosecuted.” This expression of opinion by the chairman of the Wellington Citizens’ Unemployment Committee, Mr. J. I. Goldsmith, was approved by other members of the committee as the policy to be followed )in Wellington. Mr. Goldsmith made reference to recent Christchurch cases, where action had been taken against men employed under the No. 5 scheme for not having divulged that they had a little money in the bank. “The questionnaire submitted to the men,” he said, “asked if they had any investments, and, if so, what were they. Now, is having a little money in the Post Office Savings Bank an investment? I cannot think it- is. it may be the result of thrift and be there chiefly for safe-keeping. We have taken that view in Wellington. In explaining the questionnaire to the men, we ask if they have any money in the bank, and if so how much, and an investigating officer follows it up to see that the statement is correct.
