LOCAL AND GENERAL

The secretary of the South Taranaki Automobile. Association (Mr W. G. Walkley, of Hawera.) has been advised that the Foxton-Davin Road Ls now open to traffic.

During the course of a discussion at the Egmont County meeting yesterday on derating of land and benzine tax, Cr. J. Young said that the most important matter to be decided was to .see if they could not get a reduction in the price of benzine, seeing that the cost in America was so much less. That, lie urged, was their most serious problem in this direction. Since the general order making the 10 per cent, reduction in wages, which affects miners and, other employees engaged in coal production, there has been no reduction in the retail price of coal in Auckland, the price being lixed by the Auckland Coal Dealers’ Association, to which over 200 retailers are affiliated (says the “Herald”). Within the past few days one linn of suppliers lias announced a reduction in price, but not one of the other® has taken any action. A meeting of the Association is to be held shortly to consider the possibility of making a reduction, but no definite proposals or schedule of new prices have yet been put forward. It is believed likely that some reduction will be made. Continuing the mission at the Mali ai a Methodist Church on Tuesday evening, the Rev. E. G. Etnmitt ’ was the speaker. \To an appreciative congregation he gave as his text the words of Jesus to his" disciples, “Arise, let us go hence.” He pointed out that we often fail, having argued out a subject, to get to work or to carry out the conclusions arrived at in actual life. It. was important to reason correctly, but religion consisted in doing according as we know and think. His hearers-, • the preacher stated, must have some fairly substantial knowledge of, and considerable sympathy with the way of life to which the

chr.istian man had been called. Was it not time to embark oil that life and enter into that experience? Some popular singing was enjoyed by the congregation.

While proceeding from Hawera to Opunake on Monday evening to attend the Opunake Red Dross class, Sister A. 0. Xnglis, of Hawera, and a friend had a narrow escape from serious l injury. Passing Oeo, Miss Inglis’ car (which is of the baby _ type) was involved in a oollision with a large car travelling, in the opposite direction and was severely damaged. A passing motorist came to their aid and enabled them to reach their destination.

The hairdressing and tobacconist premises of Mr W. Casey, at Stratford, were entered by a burglar on Monday evening, buit as far as can be determined by the state of the stock in the shop, nothing was stolen. There was evidence of the burglar having dropped down from the manhole in the ceiling, after exploring the upper regions of the adjacent premises. Mr Casey states that this is the second time a surreptitious visit has. been made, the first being by way of another manhole, which, was later made secure by fastenings placed on the inside. <

Fantham’s Peak, Mt". Eigmont National Park, is of more than usual! interest at present according to Messrs A. Blackman and H. Murray, of Elltliam, who made the ascent to the Syme Hut during the week-end. The climbers experienced rough weather and mist above GOTO feet, but obtained momentaiy views of the whole area. The hut was found to be completely buried, and from inside there was no sound or sign of the rough weather up above.

The Inglewood County Council decided three months ago, as* a temporary expedient to meet the hard times and to obviate a reduction in staff, that its permanent staff was to work five days of eight hours each a week. Yesterday at its meeting in Inglewood the council decided to continue on these lines until the position is reviewed later. Hie engineer stated that the men had “taken” to the idea as they realised that they were helping the unemployed by working shorter hours. Moreover, most of them rather favoured the scheme, as it gave them' Saturday morning for gardening and| other work.

Thirty years ago, when Nellie Stewart, the famous Australian actress whose death was recently reported from Sydney, was at the height of her fame: and the late. Mr. George Musgrove was a leading entrepreneur, she expressed the wish that an arm ornament should be designed, to lie known as th© Nellie Stewart bangle. Mr. Musgrove presented her with 25 sovereigns, out of which the original famous bangle was made, and it was agreed that it should never leave her arm. It was still on her arm at her death, but, though she had stipulated in her will than it should he cremated with her this was impracticable under the New South Wales law, and the bangle will probably go with the sanction of the executors to Nellie’s daughter, Nancye Lynton, wife of Mr. Mayne Lynton, the actor. Prior to her death, much controversy was aroused on the question of Nellie Stewart’s age, hut this was settled by her will. She was 74 years of ago. The need for an amendment of the law so as to empower Magistrates to deal with certain minor indictable cases was emphasised by Mr. F. H. Hunt, S.M., in the Auckland Police Court, when two young men were charged with the theft of a sheep. rSheepstealing is an indictable offence and persons so charged must be tried by a jury in the Supreme Court. As the case in question did not present any very serious features, the police consented to the substitution of tlie word “mutton” for “sheep” in the charge. This enabled the case to be heard by the Magistrate. Mr. Hunt recalled that only a day or two before a petty case of forgery, which could easily have been dealt witli in the Lower Court, had to be sent to the Supreme Court. Itinerant traders of on© kind or another are reported t© be numerous in Stratford and district, states the “Post.” On© resident on the outskirts of the borough states that at least five of them called at liis. house in the course of one day recently. There was tlie man with the travelling library, so much to. pay for the use of a. hook, and another visit in a fortnight ;the Bible tract distributor; a seller of apples at a small sum per bucket; the canvasser to help , a returned soldier by puraliasing: liis short stories; and, lastly, a female vendor of fail de rals lor her sex, whom he, left to liis wife to dispose of as oour-1 t©ouis,iy as possible under the circumstances. Some of these people, added the Stratford resident, go quietly even in face of curt dismissals at the door, hut others often assume a dictatorial attitude and push, their, way inside the house. One woman who had a visitor of the latter kind became somewhat uneasy about the matter, and as she was iblack-leading the kitchen range, she had to (threaten to throw the brush at him before he departed, muttering curses on the household.
