HARVEST FESTIVAL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) ( On Sunday evening a crowded con- 1 gregation attended a harvest festival 1 service conducted by tbe Rev. Dudley, of Manaia, who preached a fine sermon suitable to the occasion. The church 1 was beautifully decorated with flowers, while an abuandance of vegetables and i seasonable products were displayed; The Manaia Methodist Choir contributed some beautiful anthems, as also did the local choir. Mesdamcs Dudley and H. Hartley presided at the organ. On Monday' evening a sale of produce was held, which realised the fine sum of £24. Supper also was provided by the ladies. WOMEN’S DIVISION MEETING. On Wednesday afternoon the annual meeting of the W.D.F.U. was held. There was an attendance of 30 members. Mrs Denton and Miss Duff! were unanimously re-elected president and secretary rcspeetlvcsy, and Mesdamos Hooper “and Duff vice-presidents'. The annual report for the year given by the president showed a profitable and successful time spent by members •and revealed the pleasant faet that many of the young people, including boys, bad become interested. _ Many new branches in arts and crafts were taught and economical ideas given for reducing the cost of living. These would be made still further features for the new year. Mesdames Everitt and j Rye and Miss Woolford kindly gave deI monstrations on making paper flowers, • while Misses Melville and Hughes gave interesting demonstrations on making lamp shades and cutting out and altering the size of patterns respectively, while passe partout and Barbola work i were also dealt with. Messrs Gaylard and Smith kindly gave a lecture on chicken rearing and the feeding of poultry and the working of the egg circle. Sister Ingles gave a series of interesting lectures dealing with first aid and home nursing. The uses of collodion and handy disinfectants and appliances, and the taking of temperatures and pulse were fully dealt with. A verv successful old timers' dance was held in aid of the Auroa Pipe Band uniforms, also one lor the earthquake sufferers. In educational matters support was given to the idea that the gap at present existing between the primary' and the secondary' schools would be better covered in the primary schools than by sending very young people ! away r to a junior bigb school. A successful and helpful exchange of seedlings was held one afternoon and a paper on the making of rock gardens was road hv the president. The catering for the‘local cattle show and supervision at the local combined show was undertaken by branch members. In regard to “Lonely Women,” this branch kept a watch on hearing of any j sll ch ease to alleviate. At present a series of lessons on cutting out and dressmaking were being given at a ...barge of one shilling per person, to relieve distress a successful operetta was staged, which realised a large sum. I At the close of the report the president demonstrated patterns of slippers and mocassins, which wore, cut out, while a beautiful woollen knitted quilt was also shown. Mrs Svine supervised afternoon tea. Next Wednesday the usual dressmaking class continues. . The president paid a tribute to the conscientious work of Miss Duff as socI rctarv. Mesdames Dcegan and West i were" appointed advisory members for .the housekeepers' auxiliary. PERSONAL. Mrs Cyril Espiuer is visiting licr parents, Mr" and Mrs W. F. Lyndon. Miss Rene Espin is visiting Opuuakc. Miss Whiting, of Stratford, who. has been visiting Mr and Mrs A. West, has returned home. Mr “Bob” Lyndon leaves on Tuesday to take up a course at Massey College.
