MONTHLY MEETING. DISCUSSIONS AT HAWERA

Several matters of interest were before the Hawera branch of the W.D.F.U on Thursday, when Mrs. W. E. Carter presided over a goqd attendance of members. Sister Ingles attended and gave a full account of the work done by the Red Cross in Hawera district in connection with the refugees from the Hawke’s Bay area. She stressed the very satisfactory way in which the division had co-operated with the Red Cross. A circular was received from the head office in Wellington dealing with country housekeepers, and it was advised that the Dominion executive had resolved oil a reduction in salaries of housekeepers, and it was left to the auxiliary to make adjustments required The reductions were i A isiting housekeepers, £2 10s to £2; emergency 40s to 355. 35s to 30s, and 30s to 27a 6d. A list was included showing that there were two visiting housekeepers and 28 emergency ones. It was also resolved by the Dominion executive that the levy to form a fund for travelling expenses was a mistake and that a recommendation be made to the conference that this be rescinded. Thanks were accorded branches lor the splendid response to the appeal for clothing, food and accommodation, and branches were asked to hold for the present any they- might have on hand. In this connection there were on exhibition at the meeting several excellent quilts made, on the initiative or Sister Rae, of Hawera, from old woollen caps and jumpers. Miss Johnstone, the Hawera secretary, made a full report on the work of the billeting committee, with which she had been closely associated, and showed that the work, though difficult, had been very effectively done. Advice was received that there uere now 164 branches in the Dominion, new branches formed including Evans plat, Orepuki, Geraldine, and Kerikeri. The third birthday of the Taumarunui branch and the first of the Taitapu branch were duly celebrated last month. Mrs. Jackson, Dominion president, attended the hitter function. This branch of the division will hold the first birthday party in the Okaiawa hall on Wednesday afternoon, March 18. and a cordial invitation was received for all members of the Hawera branch to he present.
