UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
TRIBUTES TO WORKERS. SERVICE ON FARMS. A settler from South Taranaki, writing to the hon. secretary of the Unemployment Committee in Hawera, said that the men he had had on his farm had done excellent work and. he would like the same lot again if possible.
Another, in expressing appreciation, said he would be willing to engage the same man he had had, for a further period and would give 15s in addition to the subsidy paid. He added that after two months he might have to ask him to take less, but that the man could make it up if he wished by “pig snouts.”
Still another, in his thanked the secretary for the care taken in selection and added that “both for haymaking and grubbing they have been just the right men, not one square peg in a round hole,” and he considered it spoke volumes for the care exercised in choosing men for the right work.
Up to Thursday there were 269 registrations at Hawera of men over 20 years old, with 465 dependants. There were 153 married men and 116 single. Six new men registered on Wednesday and five on Thursday.
