OPTIMISM CAMPAIGN
EXPANSION OF INDUSTRY MANUFACTURERS’ SLOGAN INCREASE OF DEPRESSION UNWARRANTED. ißy Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 5. The presidents of Die Manufacturing Association in the four main centres met at Wellington to-day to discuss proposals for the expansion of industry a.s a means of solving the unemployment problem. Another reason for the meeting (being called by the (president of Hie New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, Mr G. Finn, Aiuckland, was the sudden steepening of the depression and the need of_ devising ways and means of launching an optimistic campaign. In his opinion, said Mr Finn, the increase in the depression was unwarranted, for the position in relation to minerals and primary produce was improving. Indications were that the world’s markets were much more pro- ~ mising than they had been for the past six months. The other presidents, Messrs I. Woolf (Christchurch), J. T. Spears (Wellington) and W. G. Kindley (Dunedin) were all in agreement with Mr Finn.
It. was decided to take the necessary steps to launch a campaign. The meeting passed the following resolution.: “That this federation generally appreciates the Prime Minister’s determination to stay the _ economic drift and stabilise national interests.” It was decided to forward a, copy of the following resolution to the Institute of Architects: “This federation respectfully requests that your institute stresses upon - its members the present need of aiding the relief of unemployment by specifying that materials be of New Zealand origin or manufacture wherever possible.”
